“Thus saith God the Lord...I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:5a,8)

  A Historical Synopsis of the

Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church

In late 1878, the Elder Elisha Patton, an associate minister of the St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church, recognized a need to help produce greater Spiritual growth in the community of Triana. With this vision and God's blessings, the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church was first established in the open, underneath a weeping willow tree, in the year of our Lord 1878. After the organization of the Church, Elder Patton was elected the first Pastor.

Mr. Amos, a well wisher responded to the need of a building to hold worship service, and allowed usage of his Blacksmith shop. Mt. Zion held its worship service in Mr. Amos's Blacksmith Shop until they were able to build a church house. As the church grew and progressed the needs of the church changed and in the year of 1905 the pastor and the congregation decided for the benefit of the Church to move from Triana to its present location on Wall Triana Highway. Because the community was known as New Haven, many people began calling the Church by that name, however the Organized name of Mt. Zion never officially changed.

Elder Elisha Patton maintained membership at St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church, and while pastoring the congregation of Mt. Zion he was called to pastor St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church. During Elder Patton Pastorate of Mt. Zion and St. Bartley, he also rose to Moderator of the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Association. Elder Elisha Patton served the church thirty-eight years. In 1916, Elder Patton was called from labor to reward.

Elder Fred Caudle, training minister of the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, stepped forward and was elected to serve as Mt. Zion's second Pastor.  Elder Fred Caudle served Mt. Zion for seven years, during the year of 1926; Elder Caudle was called from labor to reward. Elder Eli Moore, a training Minister of Mt. Zion, stepped forward and was elected the third pastor of the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, in the year of our Lord, 1927.  Elder Eli Moore served the Church for thirty-three years and he once served as the Moderator of the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Association. Elder Moore was called from labor to reward in 1960. Elder Amos Robinson, Jr. serving then as the pastor of St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church and the Moderator of the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Association, made several trips to help the church continue her work while she searched for her fourth pastor. Elder Amos Robinson attended to the needs of the church for over two years.

In 1962, the Lord again Blessed Mt. Zion with Elder Robert Toney as its fourth pastor. Elder Toney brought to Mt. Zion a wealth of knowledge and served faithfully for the next fourteen years.  In the year of our Lord, 1976, Elder Bennie Waddle was elected the fifth pastor of Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church. Elder Waddle served the Mt. Zion flock for three years.   In the year of 1981, God Blessed Mt. Zion with its sixth pastor, Elder Robert Rogers; he faithfully served for the next seven years.  Elder Robert Rogers served until 1988. After much prayer and with the help of other local ministers the Church then elected Elder Jerry Russell as its seventh pastor in 1988. The Church grew and was a blessing to many lives. Elder Russell served as pastor until January of 1994.  In 1994, Elder Mylon Burwell, current pastor, was elected to serve as the churches' eighth Pastor.

The Mt. Zion Family has also been blessed with the building of there third sanctuary at its present site. On July 28, 1997, they held dedication ceremonies for their New Sanctuary; with Elder Jerry Russell, Mt. Zion's seventh Pastor, acting as Pulpit Conductor. The Dedication Sermon was preached by Elder Eugene Lewis, pastor of St. Stephen's Primitive Baptist Church and Moderator of the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Association.

The church has set her aim to become a beacon, a bright light, a warning to an otherwise dark world, leading to Christ, which gives eternal life. We are proud of our rich history and we intend to honor our past as we braze the path ahead into the future. We believe that above all else, the primary business of the church is to introduce someone to our Savior, Jesus Christ. We pledge to provide accurate, clear, and down to earth teaching of the word. Never forgetting the "Rock" that the Church was founded on. That "Rock" still supports and undergirds the Mt. Zion Church family, and that rock is none other, than our Savior, and our Lord, Jesus Christ!
